Next Up: Maryland Terrapins at Byrd Stadium in College Park at Noon on Big Ten Network
Of course it was the Towson State Tigers but a 54-0 victory where you do pretty much anything you want on offence and hold the opposing team to 120 yards of total offense
it is a pretty good day. The WVU got off to a great start with Russell Shell returning the opening kickoff to the West Virginia 32 yard line. The Mountaineer offense then
drove 68 yards in 13 plays and jumped in front 7-0 on Wendell Smallwood’s 1 yard touchdown run. They would add a 29 yard Josh Lambert field goal on their next possession
after 3 runs from inside the 2 yard line failed to produce a touchdown and settled for a 10-0 lead after one quarter.
After the Tigers fail to pick up a first down on 4th and 4 from their own 41 yard line the Mountaineers used the short field for another touchdown drive going 44 yards on
9 plays with Russell Shell busting in from 2 yards out for his first touchdown as a Mountaineer and a 17-0 WVU lead. It was nice to see Shell score after losing control of
the football attempting to go over the top in a 1st quarter drive. After a Tigers punt the Mountaineers would get back on the board with a 64 yard drive in 8 plays with
Clint Trickett completing 5 passes on the drive including a 1 yard strike to Mario Alford for a touchdown and a 24-0 lead.
On their next possession the Mountaineers again benefitted from some more excellent field position after the Tigers sophomore punter Jake Ryder shanked a 25 yard punt out of
bounds at the WVU 45 yard line. 8 plays later Trickett would take it in himself from 5 yards out off a clever 5 wide receiver set and the EERs would take a 31-0 lead into
halftime. To be honest I thought it could have been more but the type of drives the West Virginia Offense was mounting was eating up a lot of clock and the only had 6 possessions
in the first half and scored on 5 of them with a missed 34 yard field goal being the exception.
WVU would score on their first possession of the 2nd half going 75 yards in just 6 plays. The drive featured 3 consecutive 16 yard plays by Russell Shell and Wendell Smallwood
with Clint Trickett finding Jordan Thompson on a beautiful 19 yard touchdown pass and a 38-0 lead. On the next possession it appeared the Mountaineers would score again marching
81 yards in 12 plays and taking five minutes off the clock but on forth and one at the Towson 4 yard lines Tight End Cody Clay appeared to make an outstanding catch of a low pass
by Trickett but after a replay review it was ruled incomplete, however on their first snap from their own 4 yard line Towson quarterback Joe Brennan threw the ball away attempting
to avoid a sack in the end zone and the Mountaineer defense was awarded a safety and a 40-0 lead. After the free kick coach Holgorsen put in the second unit and freshman quarterback
William Crest made his Mountaineer debut. After driving to the Tigers 17 Crest was sacked for a 6 yard loss and fumbled the football to end the drive.
After another failed forth down play WVU would again get the football in Towson territory to start a drive and 5 plays later William Crest took it in from 4 yards out for his first
of what we hope will be MANY Mountaineer touchdowns and a 48-0 lead. The Mountaineers would close out the scoring with another William Crest scoring drive of 59 yards in 11 plays
which included Crests first two pass completions as a Mountaineer. The end result a 54-0 West Virginia victory.
POSITIVES & NEGATIVES:
The Positives were of course the steady solid play of the West Virginia offense. And even though it was Towson State it was still a strong performance with offensive drives of
13, 12, 11, and 10 plays and two more 8 play drives. It is always a positive to maintain the football through long sustained drives without making critical errors. 96 offensive
snaps in this game. 52 runs and 44 passes and 606 yards of total offense.
Another great positive is how strong and confident the new “Surgically repaired” Clint Trickett looks. No problems making the throws this season. In the 2 games against Alabama
and Towson Trickett is a combined 64 0f 85 for 713 yards and 3 touchdowns with no interceptions.
The defense was another positive as anytime you hold any team to 120 yards of total offense it is a positive. The Tigers completed just 8 of 24 pass attempts for 80 yards and rushed
the ball 29 times for 42 yards. Just 7 first downs in the game 4-15 on 3rd down and 0-3 on 4th down conversion attempts.
No real negatives to speak of in this game.
So now the Mountaineers travel to College Park Maryland to battle long time rival Maryland. The game will air at noon on the Big Ten Network.
Hello Mountaineers, well I missed my first opening day game in many years as I am in Orlando Florida on vacation and business until September 12th. However do to the
friendly confines of the ESPN Club I was able to see the game and I must say I am somewhat disappointed that I missed this particular game as it was a pretty solid
performance across the board with the only problem being some red zone troubles early in the game.
